Sex Trafficking Survivor Goes Public with GWEN: January 11 National Human Trafficking Day

  (January 11, 2013)

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 11, 2013

For most, National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is an annual commemoration, but it is a daily mission for human trafficking survivor and activist Chong Kim. A survivor of abuse, child exploitation, domestic violence and trafficking, and the subject of the upcoming feature film "Eden," Kim gets personal by sharing her story in the Global Women's Empowerment Network's (GWEN) "Tell Us Your Story" campaign. Her video is available here.

For the past 10 years, Kim has dedicated her life to human rights issues, child exploitation and trafficking, appearing in the media and at events as an unfortunate authority on the topic of human trafficking. She was instrumental in defeating the European Parliaments efforts to legalize prostitution. Along with telling her story through GWEN, Kim announced she is also joining the organization's advisory board and will serve as GWEN's anti-trafficking expert.

The GWEN campaign is a global search for the most moving empowerment story of triumph over abuse and runs through International Women's Day on March 8, 2013. Those interested in participating in the campaign with Kim can share their vision, passion, and experiences of healing by submitting a video of up to three minutes long focusing on such topics as domestic abuse, sexual abuse, bullying and human trafficking.

Participants can use their computer, phone, or digital camera to upload content to the GWEN video editing browser at and get started. The GWEN cloud-based editor does the rest without having to download any software it is all accessible through the GWEN browser.

At the close of submissions for the "Tell Us Your Story" campaign, the GWEN community will vote for the most compelling story and the selected storyteller will have the opportunity to have a professional Hollywood production crew film their story and be a guest on GWENs upcoming docu-series.

"Eden," which details three years in the mid '90s when Kim was forced into prostitution and sex slavery that started when she was 19, opens in limited release in New York March 20 through April 2, 2013. The film features Jamie Chung (Hangover 2, Sucker Punch and Grown Ups), Beau Bridges (Max Payne, The Fabulous Baker Boys and Stargate SG-1), and Matt OLeary (Brick, Live Free or Die Hard and Spy Kids 2 & 3). GWEN co-founder and COO Tess Cacciatore explained the impetus behind the campaign and the value Kim brings to it. "The Global Women's Empowerment Network created the 'Tell Us Your Story' campaign to give a voice to those who are ready to share and begin to heal and Chong Kim personifies our mission to share stories of tragedy to triumph. We want victims, perpetrators and survivors to witness how the power of the human spirit can prevail and, with support from GWEN and people around the world, we can help each other heal and move beyond abuse to a new level of empowerment and understanding."

Of her involvement, Kim said, I have considered involvement with many organizations that support anti-trafficking and empowering women and I chose the Global Women's Empowerment Network because it stands out in following through on its mission and taking action. I also like the fact that GWEN stands for the true essence of the original Welsh meaning -- to be fair and blessed. This is what the Global Women's Empowerment Network represents as it empowers others.

Founded in 2012, the Global Women's Empowerment Network (GWEN) is a global nonprofit organization that uses technology, multimedia programming, and socially conscious product lines to raise awareness and funding to support programs that aid in the healing of women and children who have experienced violence and abuse. This fall, GWEN ( launched its first two programs designed to provide communication and cause-related solutions that inspire victims to cultivate, strengthen, and share their inner voice to gain confidence and heal - the GWEN Alert, a free safety phone app for smart phones available through iTunes and The Tell Us Your Story campaign.

The organization is seeking mentors and coaches. If interested, please email media (at) gwennetwork (dot) org.
