The Self-Directed-Search Website Is now Mobile Friendly and More Accessible!

  (March 13, 2018)

LUTZ, Fla., March 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Self-Directed Search (SDS) website is now designed to be responsive to mobile devices and more accessible to users with disabilities.

The user-friendly site ( adapts quickly and easily to smartphones and tablets, allowing career counselors, those in career transition, veterans, students, and parents to learn more about the SDS at any time and on nearly any mobile device.

The site has also been updated to make use more accessible for those with disabilities. It now features alternative text for images when relevant, navigation and keyboard shortcuts, and closed captioning for all videos. The update features Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA) integration, and the site passes the Webaim WAVE accessibility evaluation tool.

Developed by John Holland, PhD, in 1971, the SDS has been translated into 30 languages and has helped more than 36 million people connect to a career they love. It is based on Dr. Holland's theory, known as RIASEC theory, that both people and working environments can be classified according to six basic types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Core to this theory is the idea that the closer a personality type aligns to a work environment type, the more likely one is to find job fulfillment and career satisfaction.

After users complete the 20-minute assessment, they learn their Summary Code, which tells them the RIASEC types they resemble most. Based on their entered demographic information, they then receive a StandardSDS, StudentSDS, or VeteranSDS report that features interactive tables with occupational and educational matches. The ability to sort, filter, and select information based on educational requirements, current salary data, job outlook and more helps users explore and narrow their choices. The report also allows them to delve deeper into their options through the use of career clusters, which group similar types of occupations together.

The updated site allows users to learn more about the SDS at any time and on nearly every device to help them find a career they love. Visit for more information.

The SDS is published by PAR, Inc.
